the history of The Soil Association
image of Lady Eve on a tractor The ideas set out by Lady Eve Balfour in The Living Soil in 1943, inspired the foundation of the Soil Association three years later. Those ideas and their manifestation through the practice of organic farming encapsulate 'sustainability' – a term only coined in 1987 with the publication of the UN report, 'Our Common Future', which highlighted the environmental challenges facing our planet.

In many ways the Soil Association can claim to be the first organisation to promote and practice sustainable development.
