Commonwork is a group of organisations based on at Bore Place organic farm and study centre, working towards sustainable solutions in farming, the environment and education. The organic conversion of the farm was completed between 1996-2001. 335 hectares are farmed in total, including 147 rented from neighbouring farms to increase self reliance in terms of feed stuff and to allow stock numbers to be kept up to around 260 cows.
Organic livestock
Bore Place has a mixed organic farm with 260 milking cows, 100 'followers' (young stock) and a flock of 100 Llyn ewes and their lambs. The dairy herd consists of Friesian Holstein milking cows which due to high quality forage, good rationing and excellent management are in fine condition. Milking is done twice a day at 5.00am and 2.30pm, taking on average 4 hours.
Commonwork centre and gardens
A manor house and group of historic farm buildings has been converted to form the Commonwork Centre, offering space for resident and non-resident groups to join in Commonwork projects or develop their own work. The gardens, managed organically, offer aesthetic and historical interest and include permaculture, wildlife and coppice areas.
Education programme
Offering experiential activities at Bore Place for schools, colleges and community groups, and support for teachers inside and outside the National Curriculum. Adult courses are available including breadmaking, claywork, birds, moths and bats, ponds and woods, green woodwork, and natural gardening.
Conference and study centre
Residential and day accommodation in and around historic manor house and gardens, surrounded by woodlands, hedgerows and ponds. Available to public, private and voluntary sectors. A programme of weekend retreats organised by Commonwork are available – 24 or 48 hour breaks – offering an opportunity to relax and unwind
Field trail
2.5 miles of glorious fields, woodland and ponds, open to the public all year round. Starting at Bore Place, at a leisurely pace the eastern section of the trail returning via the road approach to Bore Place from the south takes 1.5 hours. A further 1 hour is necessary to cover the western section, which gives views over Bough Beech Reservoir. The field trail plan is displayed in the car park and trail leaflets are available from the Commonwork office.
